Hammer Time!

The boys wanted to be interviewed for the start of school. And they would only answer questions they approved.  How fitting that they also completely took over creative direction for their back to school photos. Which makes sense because, after all, they are now both in elementary school and they know everything. Take it away, boys!

So long, SJSU!

For the last five years, San Jose State has been a part of our school life on an almost daily basis. The drive. The parking lot. The sign-in sheet. The playdough, snacks and circle times. But on this last day of summer school, all of those mundane, daily tasks became kind of special as we did them for the last time and said goodbye.

We said goodbye to Teacher Gary, Teacher Joy and some of the student teachers.

Yosemite!

We checked off another item on our California bucket list. And I’m thinking we may just want to toss the rest of the list because I don’t think anything else will come close to Yosemite Valley.

20160521_082730_HDR

We took the scenic route in order to experience Yosemite for the first time via Tunnel View. And when we emerged from the tunnel, this was our first full glimpse of Yosemite:

20160521_123024_Burst01

We set up camp at our home away from home: Upper Pines #9.  Check out our view!

And we got the lay of the Valley.

These little bears endured their most challenging camping trip yet including lots of rain, temperatures in the high 30s and (for Fin) a night of croupy breathing issues.  But they were in heaven.

There were enormous rocks to climb everywhere.

Any Given Sunday

I supposed I shouldn’t be surprised he fell so hard for football.

DSC_0117

Before he was born and Elijah was the front-runner name, I saw an Eli Manning commercial. That was it. Eli was his name. And now he’s 7. And his equally football-obsessed brother is 5.

So what kind of birthday party do you have when Super Bowl 50 is being played 10 miles from your house? A Super Bowl kick-off party!

California Love

We spent the last day of 2015 enjoying some of the things we love most about California:

More parks and valley views than we can count.

The Year We Were Almost a Superhero Family

The boys had been eyeing those muscle-laden superhero costumes for years. So when we were a month out from Halloween and they still weren’t sure, we went looking for inspiration. They saw them. They had to have them. It was looking like I wasn’t going to get the costume making fix I look forward to every Halloween.

Or not…Mom and Dad might as well join in the fun, right?

So one Sunday morning, we tried out the donut shop near our new place and headed to the top of a parking garage to capture our superhero family costumes. (And then ask Dad to work some additional magic.)

Some of us were thrilled with the photoshoot.

The Redwood Treehouse

Our Tuesday morning was really rough.

Then the directions to the Treehouse weren’t entirely accurate which resulted in a much longer car ride than anyone wanted.

And when we finally pulled up to the red barn to unload, we discovered that all of the perishable items we had packed were sitting in the kitchen. At home.

But after reading 52 Magic Treehouse books this year and waiting over two long months for this day, we had made it.  Loaded down with half our house, we started down the long winding path.

DSC_0075

And when the Treehouse finally came into sight, I will never forget their dash to the bridge and squeals of delight. It truly is a magical place.

Big (little) man on campus

You know all those people who look longingly at your young children and tell you, “Gosh, I miss those days. Appreciate them when they’re young!” They tell you this in the grocery store while your toddler has just pooped his pants, your preschooler is screaming about granola bars and you’re about to cry.

I’m feeling like I might say that to someone soon.  And I apologize in advance.

It’s his last year of preschool. How did this happen?

DSC_0021

I’m not ready for him to start pronouncing things correctly.

When you play this game, it weepeats.

There’s a Waiders sign.

It’s in the minnel dwawer, then bwing it.

Thwee wed, thwee puhple, thwee bwack…

I’m not ready for him to stop thinking like a preschooler.

Are there dinosaurs in our world?

(Pointing to a car.) Is that a Leopard? (Jaguar.)

When you were a little girl I was in your tummy watching you do cartwheels.

Are there buffalos in our world?

(Pointing to his chin, confused.) You wear a chin guard here? (Shin guard.)

Do Grandma and Grandpa live in our world?

I’m not ready for him to join his brother at school next year. (Or for Fin to want to wear his kindergarten uniform to his first day of preschool!)

Eli, will you take a picture with your brother on his first day?

DSC_0007

Eli, can you smile?

DSC_0010

ELI!

DSC_0012

Soon I’m going to miss Fin saying (loudly) that someone is fat or shouting about “nipple covers” in public or testing me non-stop. I’m going to miss the days when all he wants to do the day before school is spend the day with me and nobody else. (And test me more.)

Baseball Brothers

Last year he patiently waited on the sidelines – cheering on his brother. This year Fin couldn’t wait to join Eli on the field for his first year of baseball.
